Letter of Support from John O'Connor, President of Troy Chamber of Commerce

Greater Troy Chamber of Commerce
251 River Street
Monument Square
Troy, New York 12180
518/274-7020

April 1986

To the Troy Business Community,

On August 17 at Riverfront Park, the Troy community will pay tribute to Irish Patriot and one time Troy citizen James Connolly.

A signatory to the "Proclamation of the Irish Republic," which later was to become the country's declaration of independence, and one of the leaders of the Easter Monday "Rising" in Ireland in 1916, Connolly lived in Troy from 1903-1905. Today, Connolly is considered a folk hero and a historical figure of Ireland's past.

The James Connolly Commemorative Celebration, which will coincide with the annual Irish Festival at the park, will include a parade and festival, a ceremony enshrining Connolly as a "son of Troy" and the dedication of a monument to the memory of Connolly. Many business and civic leaders have already expressed their support for this tribute.

The James Connolly Commemorative Committee, chaired by James J. Devine, will be asking the business community to support this endeavor through the purchase of an advertisement in a commemorative journal or the sponsorship of some events planned for the day.

The Greater Troy Chamber of Commerce endorses this celebration which will bring national and international recognition to the city.

Sincerely,

[signature]
